Your First IMVU Derive

Your first derive takes an afternoon: find a product that allows deriving, put your textures on it, make an icon and submit.

1. Find a good derivable

  • Look for products marked as derivable in the Catalog. Only those can be built on.
  • Check the derivation cost: it is added to your price on every sale. Cheaper bases leave room for your profit.
  • Prefer bases with clean UV maps and texture templates from the creator. Bad UVs make good textures look wrong.

2. Make your textures

  1. Open the base in Create Mode (or Studio) and derive from it.
  2. Export or download the template the creator provides, or save the original textures as a guide.
  3. Paint over it in your editor: new colours, patterns, fabrics, logos you own. Keep the exact image size.
  4. Load each PNG into the matching material slot and check it in the preview from every angle.

3. Make an icon that sells

Your Catalog icon is 100×80 pixels and it is the first thing buyers see. Use a bright, tight crop of your own product on a clean background. Our free Catalog Image Maker turns a screenshot into a ready icon under 50 KB.

4. Follow the derive rules

  • Zero Change Derives (re-submitting a base without changes) are allowed, but they rarely sell.
  • Never reuse the original creator’s icon or product images. IMVU treats that as theft and it can lead to a DMCA takedown.
  • Only use images you made or have the rights to.

IMVU Only is an independent fan site and is not affiliated with IMVU Inc. Rules and fees can change; check IMVU Help before you submit.
